A few of our favorites:

Norma's Kitchen

Norma's Kitchen serves up the tastiest jambalaya, greens, muffalatta, red beans and rice - a genuine little piece of Louisiana right on Hayden Island! Open from 11:00 A.M. - 7:00 P.M., this waterside cafe is a popular local haunt. Get there early to beat the locals to the food, or risk missing out.

Island Café

Some things in life are worth the wait. We include Island Café on that list! Open only from May to September, from 11:00 A.M. to sunset, this family-run, 20-year-old spot is one of our must-sees. As for the must-try items? You can't go wrong with lobster sandwich wraps, the rum cocktails, or any of the delectable appetizers. An added bonus: a picturesque view of the boats out on the river.

It's not typical Mexican fare here: Mextiza's chef says his cuisine is "European palate meets Mexico." Housed in an old auto repair shop in the Killingsworth neighborhood just eight minutes from our hotel, Mextiza is owner Oswaldo Bibiano's second restaurant, and has a menu chock-full of non-traditional, Mexico-meets-Europe specialties.

The Mississippi Studios/Bar Bar

Where else in the world can you throw back a beer, chow down on a burger and groove to music - all in a former Baptist church? This recording studio-turned-music venue is a unique experiment in sound and taste. Bar Bar serves up juicy burgers daily from noon until 2am, and their unbeatable happy hours take place Sunday through Thursday, noon 'til 7:00 P.M. and Friday and Saturday, noon 'til 6:00 P.M. Insider's tip: Minors are allowed in the restaurant and on the patio until 9:00 P.M., but all shows are 21 and over unless otherwise noted.

The Hollywood Theater

Three hundred of the world's finest films, groundbreaking educational programs, and local filmmaker support: The Hollywood Theater, a nationally-renowned cultural institution right in the heart of Portland, hosts all of the above.
